The Rover engine actually started in life in the USA as the Buick engine as far back as 1961. The engine block itself was made of an all-aluminum.The main advantage was it was compact and lightweight, weighing only 144 kg (318 lb). In the Buick it was tuned to a maximum power output of 185 hp, also Oldsmobile used the same engine in their car as well and got the figure up to 215 hp. The engine was very successful in both models with sales of 376,799 cars built for the Buick engine in just three years. A similar number of Oldsmobile 215 engines were also produced. There were coolant and oil issues if the correct antifreeze was not used, and the fact that alloy engine was quite expensive to build than its iron stablemate. For this reason Buick and Oldsmobile stopped production of the engine in 1963. Buick then made a similar engine made out of iron which was based on the alloy block. Also a V6 model was introduced in later life with a cut down crankshaft which lived on until 2008.
The head of Rover engineering J Bruce J Mc Williams went to investigate the possibilities of bringing the Buick back to England to use in Rover. It was thought that McWilliams first saw the Buick V8 at the works in Mercury Marine, where he was negotiating sales of Rover gas turbines and diesel engines to the company. It appears that McWilliams was not aware of the Buick engine before this time. The potential was seen for the very light weight engine to be used in some of the British motors of the day. Including replacing the heavy weight 6 cylinder engine of the P5. McWilliams and William Martin-Hurst began to campaign with GM to try and convince them to sell the tooling to Rover, which they finally agreed to do in January 1965. Retiring Buick engineer Joe Turley then moved to the UK to act as a consultant to Rover to help them get set up. The Rover engine became a big hit in the UK.
The Buck engine first appeared in the Rover P5. It then went on to be fitted in the Rover P6 and was subsequently put into the Rover SD1 which in the Vitesse model produced nearly 200bhp. Range Rover also used the engine in some of their vehicles. The engine was widely sold by Rover to small car builders, and has appeared in a wide variety of vehicles. Rover V8s feature in some models from Morgan, TVR, Triumph, Land Rover and MG, among many others.
The first use of the engine was in a car named the Warick 350GT that never saw the light of day. The Rover V8 has also been utilised in light aircraft and became a big hit on the custom scene. The US also used the engine in some of their sporty cars, such as the Chevy Vega and MGB.
Even the Buick iron block 300 cubic inch engine started using aluminum cylinder heads to save weight. To produce more power out of the Rover engine, the Buick heads could be bolted on to the Rover engine with a few mods to produce even more power. The last Rover to have a real Rover V8 was the Rover SD1 Vitesse.
The engine continued to be used by Land Rover in their Range Rovers until the company was sold to Ford by BMW. The production of the engine still carried on with license given to MCT engineering by Land Rover to keep the engine going. MCT continued to produce the engine for aftermarket use and replacements even though Land Rover itself switched to using Jaguar engines.
