What is OBD II and why you should you care. Chances are at some point you will see a check engine light on your own car and learning a little bit about it now has major advantages. Often this type of car repair can be complicated or technical and also very costly.

If you learn about OBD systems you can lower costs of car repairs in 2 ways. Learning about the onboard diagnostic system should give you enough confidence to perform the first steps for diagnosis yourself. Is there less emissions with OBD II

OBD II which is the second generation was designed to meet the strict new emissions standards put forward by the federal government along with the smog state of California.

The main goal of this system was to detect when engine wear or component failure caused exhaust emissions to increase by 50% or more. Obd mandated standard repair and diagnostic procedures without the need for dedicated specialty equipment.

To accomplish these goals manufacturers needed to change many aspects of their electronic engine control systems. According to the guidelines of the OBD II mandate all automobiles should have a universal diagnostic test connector known as a DLC or data Link connector.

These connectors should be mounted in a standard location and must be located under the driver’s side dash of the vehicle, and it must be visible. A standard list of diagnostic trouble codes using the society of automotive engineers (SAE) standard J2012.

The OBD system must turn on the check engine light if the vehicle conditions would allow emissions to exceed 1.5 times the allowable standard for that model year. Besides enhancements to the computer’s capacities, some additional hardware is required to monitor the emissions performance closely enough to fulfill the tighter mandates.

In most cases this hardware consists of additional heated oxygen sensors down stream from the catalytic converter to measure how it is doing at cleaning the exhaust.

OBD functions are built into a cars electronic control module and will monitor all sensors and components that affect vehicle emmisions performance. All input and output devices are automatically checked out by a troubleshooting program or routine to confirm its proper function.

 

How did OBD I work

OBD I was the first generation of onboard diagnostics systems and was designed to monitor some of the vehicle’s emission control components. Required on all 1991 and newer vehicles. Since OBD I systems only monitored a few sensors they did not do well in monitoring total emmission system performance.

OBD two was developed to address these shortfalls of its predecessor and has also allowed more accurate diagnosis by professional auto mechanics. The older the vehicle gets the more chance that you will see a check engine light come on. Often the complexity of diagnosis is related to the automobiles age.

The electrical wire harness and connectors that allow the many parts to talk to each other were mandated by the government to last for ten years or 100k miles.

The further a vehicle gets away from this milestone, the more likely a hard-to-find electrical problem could develop. This is why I believe that learning car repair is a valuable skill set even if you do not plan to fix it yourself.

Because of the intense popularity of the sport of NASCAR across the entire United States, it should come as no surprise that interest in Richard Petty Trivia is always high, because Petty is one of the most dynamic and recognizable icons the sport has ever had. Did you know that Petty is now 72 years old, having been born on July 2, 1937? While you might know that he is nicknamed “The King”, did you know how well he earned that title? He has won the NASCAR Championship more times than any other driver in the history of the sport (although Dale Earnhardt has tied him) and has also won the Daytona 500 more times than anyone else at seven.  Ten consecutive wins in a single season, more than 200 total career wins, and 27 races won in a single season are all outstanding records that made sure that Richard Lee Petty will forever be known as the king of his sport.

 

Richard Petty Trivia will also usually reference the three crashes that he is very lucky to have survived. In 1970, 1980, and 1988 Petty was involved in potentially fatal accidents that he luckily escaped from. The crash in 1970 prompted Petty to design the net, which is used to cover the driver’s side window in NASCAR vehicles and which the league has since began to require on all cars. During the two earlier crashes, Petty experienced injuries; the most serious being in 1980 when he had serious neck trauma. The crash in 1988 was widely considered to be the most spectacular, with the car flipping several times, and yet the injuries to the driver were the most minimal on this crash, partly due to the increase of safety technology which had taken place over the years in between the various crashes Petty was a part of.

 

Petty drove many different cars over his career, including a Plymouth, a Ford, a Plymouth Superbird, a Dodge Magnum, a Chevy Monte Carlo, a Buick Regal, and a Pontiac Grand Prix, among others. He is probably most famously associated with the Plymouth brand, although he did spend many years racing a variety of different cars due to both his personal preference and internal politics between his race teams and manufacturers.

 

One other interesting fact about Richard Petty is that he has always been known as being among the most personable of all sports celebrities and is extremely famous for always making time for his fans; signing at some of the longest autograph sessions the sport has known.
